The United Fanzine Organization brings together independent comic, zine, and small-press publishers who believe in creativity, cooperation, and sharing their work with others.

Membership is open to creators who actively publish and are willing to participate in the cooperative. Applicants submit a current publication to the membership for review, and admission is decided by a simple majority vote.

How Membership Works

1. Submit Your Publication

Send a copy of your current comic or zine to every member listed on the UFO roster, along with a letter explaining your intent to join the cooperative.

2. Membership Vote

Current members vote yes or no on the application. The Chairman will notify you once a simple majority has decided.

3. Pay Annual Dues

Accepted members pay annual dues of $18.00 to the UFO Chairman.

4. Participate in the Co-op

Members follow the UFO Constitution, exchange publications, contribute to Tetragrammaton Fragments, and support the work of fellow publishers.

Membership Responsibilities

Membership in the UFO is active, not passive. Members are expected to publish, participate, and contribute to the cooperative.

Publish at Least 20 Pages Per Year

Members are required to publish a minimum of 20 pages each year and send a free copy to every UFO member.

Display the UFO Symbol

Member publications must carry the UFO symbol on the front cover, back cover, or both.

Include the UFO Checklist

Every UFO publication must include the current UFO Checklist. An abbreviated version is permitted for publications of 16 pages or fewer.

Contribute to the Newsletter

Members should submit a column to at least every other issue of the bi-monthly UFO newsletter, Tetragrammaton Fragments.

Membership is based on the quality of an applicant's creative work. The United Fanzine Organization does not discriminate on the basis of race, creed, color, or sex.

The UFO Constitution

The Constitution defines the responsibilities of members, honorary members, and the UFO Chairman.

Article One: Becoming a Member

To become a member of the United Fanzine Organization co-op, an applicant should send a copy of his or her comic or zine to all members listed on the roster. Approval is based on a simple majority vote by the members.

Article Two: Membership Requirements

  1. Members are required to publish a minimum of 20 pages per year. A free copy should be sent to each member.
  2. Member publications are to carry the UFO symbol on the front and/or back cover.
  3. Every UFO zine must carry the UFO Checklist. An abbreviated version is permissible for publications of 16 pages or less.
  4. Member dues are $18 per year. If a member leaves the group, his or her dues will be converted to a subscription to the UFO Newsletter.
  5. Each member should submit a column to at least every other issue of the UFO Newsletter. Columns should ideally discuss club business, member applicants, and new memberzines, although other material may also be included.

Article Three: Honorary Memberships

Honorary Members are persons recognized by the Chairman for their history, influence, and importance to the co-op.

They may contribute to the Newsletter, but have no voting powers, are not required to pay dues, and are not required to meet publication requirements.

It is at the discretion of each member whether to send an Honorary Member a copy of a memberzine.

Article Four: The UFO Chairman

  1. Annual Election: A Chairman shall be elected in late November or early December by a majority vote of the members, to a one-year term beginning January 1.
  2. Responsibilities: The Chairman's duties include editing and publishing the bi-monthly UFO Newsletter, conducting general co-op business, and managing member dues accounts.
  3. Emergency Chairman: The UFO Chairman should appoint an Emergency Chairman immediately upon assuming office. The Emergency Chairman assumes the Chairmanship if the elected Chairman is unable to complete the term.
